Fall Capsule Wardrobe
Capsule wardrobes are actually a lot of fun to put together. I have been doing this for so long that whenever I am shopping around for a new clothing item, I automatically start thinking of all the different ways I could wear it with items already in my closet. That is the beauty of a functional capsule! Every single item can be mixed and matched into different outfits with little to no effort.
In the past, I prepared a capsule guide for blog readers to purchase. The guide contained a step-by-step guide to create a capsule closet from scratch, primary & secondary links for every capsule item, and 100 different outfit ideas for the current season. For Fall 2024, the guide will not be available for purchase. However, this blog post will walk you through how to detox your closet so that you can create the foundation for your own seasonal capsule closet!
I work from home in the Midwest USA and have two little boys. The majority of my day is spent working at a computer, followed by family/play time with my boys. Our weekends are busy with church and various casual events with family and friends, plus an occasional date/girls night. Therefore, this wardrobe is a reflection of pieces I would wear on a day to day basis. Each of these items could easily be swapped out for similar pieces that would better fit you lifestyle. For example, if you work in an office, you might choose to swap the gray sweatpants for gray trousers! You will achieve a similar look that is tailored to fit your needs.
Capsule Items
Having utilized capsule wardrobe for so long, I have found the 25-30 pieces are the ideal amount of items that work best for my lifestyle. With this amount you can easily create about 100 different outfits, with the proper ratio of tops, bottoms, and shoes. This number will fluctuate from person to person, so keep in mind that you can make your capsule wardrobe as big or small as you like. This Fall capsule includes 27 pieces to accommodate a functional and relaxed lifestyle with the occasional elevated look.
For the color palette, I leaned into earthy and moody tones with a lot of blacks, grays, and denim with a touch of camel, brown, and olive. This may be one of my favorite Fall collections yet!
black tank: This is a great layering piece to have on hand for the transition from Summer to Fall.
brown tank: Earth tones are popular this year and I love incorporating the trend with this wardrobe staple.
fitted t-shirt: This is a must have for any capsule wardrobe. It can be worn year-round.
knit t-shirt: The t-shirt I linked is under $10 at Target! It is so good I own it in black as well. Really great quality and stretchy without hugging the body.
relaxed t-shirt: A casual t-shirt that can be worn alone or under jackets and cardigans. I chose to grab this one in brown for the capsule. Black, white, gray, or camel would be great alternatives as well.
graphic t-shirt: This graphic shirt has been on rotation in my wardrobe for years. It is lightweight and comfortable. I sized up one for a more oversized fit and to make it leggings friendly.
seamless top: When you need a slightly elevated layering item, this is a great option. The smooth matte texture, seamless appearance, and fitted shape gives this top a very elevated look.
knit top: A simple long sleeve top like this will wear well from Fall through Spring. Pair it with jeans and dress it up or down depending on the occasion.
striped sweater: I adore this sweater for so many reasons. It is fashion forward but is ultra comfortable. I own this similar sweater and it literally feels like I’m wearing a cozy blanket. Such a great Fall/Winter item!
cardigan: This short, but not cropped, cardigan is back in style and I’m here for it. I opted for the camel color since it is such a pretty color for the Fall season.
button down: A wardrobe staple that is almost always included in my capsule season after season. I invested in a really nice button down years ago and it has held up well. There is also a good option at Walmart. Linking both price points in my LTK shop.
coatigan: If you are debating adding this item to your capsule wardrobe, check out this post dedicated to coatigans and see several different outfit options there as well!
shacket: Another item I consider a must have Fall item, the shacket! This shacket blog post contains outfit ideas and styling tips. For this capsule I chose a denim shacket (my exact one is sold out but I linked a similar version), however there are various fabrics and colors that would compliment this capsule nicely. Choose whichever look you think is best for your wardrobe!
bomber jacket: This pretty olive jacket adds just a touch of color for this Fall capsule wardrobe.
denim jacket: A jean jacket is another must have for a Fall Capsule Wardrobe in my opinion. My favorite jacket is a high quality investment, this one is an affordable alternative.
blazer: Great for casual and dressy outfits. The one I linked is from Amazon and such great quality.
fleece pants: Working from home, I never wear trouser. Instead, I opt for really nice wide leg fleece pants like these. I get compliments all the time and they are so comfortable!
light denim: I personally own this denim in the XL length (i’m just shy of 5’6″) and wear them cuffed… so cute! When the cuffed look is no longer trending I will cut the bottom off for a raw hem look.
medium denim: These straight ankle jeans are so flattering and the wash (summer slide – light indigo) is very pretty! I’ve seen a lot of other people wear them and find them to look great on different body types. These run TTS and are stretchy!! I can wear them all day long and move freely without feeling constricted.
dark denim: This rich deep blue shade is a refreshing change to all of the lighter denim styles we see during Spring and Summer.
Leggings: Target has some of my favorite leggings and the price is so good!
Silk skirt: Don’t miss this silk skirt, it is washable and has an elastic waist! I share my full review of it in this blog post!
Court sneakers: I personally own the Nike court sneakers, but I also love these sneakers and include them in my year round capsules!
Casual sneakers: A smart casual sneaker is a wardrobe staple these days. It is hard to scroll through Pinterest without coming across a chic sneakers outfit! I also have yet to meet a pair a New Balance I don’t like.
Clogs: The clogs are on trend this year and I couldn’t pass on them for the Fall capsule. They are easy to wear, stylish, and neutral.
Flats: While any black shoe can be included in this capsule, I chose a nice knit shoe I love. These flats are pricey and also come with a lot of benefits, check out my full review to learn more about them! These flats are another great option and also budget friendly.
Ankle boots: These boots wear well with all of the jeans and even the skirt! Branch out and wear them with the leggings, too! Leggings, the black tank, and coatigan would be cute!
Capsule Outfits
I’ve created 30 outfits for this post using the items described above. These looks have not been accessorized and they do not utilize outerwear. However, with this neutral color palette you should have no issues adding finishing touches using items you already own!
What is not included in my Fall capsule wardrobe?
I only include items that are worn on a day-to-day basis. I do not include activewear, outerwear, swimwear, or formalwear as these are not everyday pieces and are completely subjective.
